Education for 16-24s General Information Travel Training As part of the Supported Employment programme, bemix can support you to become travel trained! When you get a job, it is likely you will have to travel to get there. It might be a 5 minute walk or a 30 minute bus ride. When we do these journeys, we can all find public transport to be overwhelming or confusing. We want to give you confidence to handle these situations and become further independent in life! Take a look at our travel training quiz below to better understand what travel training you may need. Start here: We understand that public transport can be costly! If we can, we can help apply for bursaries, etc. You can also click on the following links to apply for a bus pass (FREE) and a rail card (£20). Travel training is one of the essential parts to our Supported Employment programme. This is offered as part of your placement in order to support your independence into work. In September, we may be able to offer some initial travel training for the classroom too. (However, this would be a short-term introduction to it). The level and duration of travel training you complete will be based on what you need. It can include the following with a bemix staff member: Someone meeting you at home and travelling to work and back with you. Someone meeting you at the bus/train station to complete this part of the journey with you. Someone supporting you to buy tickets, knowing what to ask for or using a ticket machine. Someone supporting you to understand what different signs mean and reading timetables. Someone joining you on the bus/train but sitting away, at the back/front. Someone meeting you at the other end of the journey and walking to work with you. Someone supporting you to develop strategies to manage challenging situations. (For example, if the bus is cancelled). We find that in most situations, young people are able to use public transport just fine and the main barrier is confidence. We’re here to help you feel more comfortable with this so you can become independent, not only for work but socially too! "It was really helpful that I had a bemix coach come with me when I started travelling as I had never been to Faversham on the bus before, so I didn't know where to get off. My coach helped me become more confident and I can get on the bus on my own with no problem now." Aiden, Supported Intern Click here for more info on our venues
